  MINNEAPOLIS PICKS
life + style in the Twin Cities
March 18, 2011

We have a confession. We’ve let ourselves go. With pasty skin, back jiggle (yes, it’s possible), and a briar patch forming above our eyes, we’re a complete embarrassment.  Being cooped up indoors for last three months has caused our motivation for upkeep to all but vanish, along with our waistline.

But please don’t judge! This week, 50-degree weather has got us springing into action. With a fresh face (via The Brow Studio), workout buddy (Tiger Athletics) and a diet full of Omega-3-rich fish (mouthwatering Wasabi sushi), we’ll be ready to reunite with society in no time.

Feature Minneapolis Picks in the “Like” column on your Facebook homepage. We’ll be scrolling through profiles to see who’s got us listed and if we land on yours, you could win a $25 gift card to Maha! Inspired Activewear! As always, we’ll announce the winner on our new Facebook page next week.

One Small Indulgence

We try to practice a low-maintenance lifestyle. No weekly facials. No acrylic nails. No “Oh God, I can’t wear peep-toes because my pedi isn’t 24-hours fresh” five-alarm freak outs. But we’re also not immune to a good pampering session and we’re certainly not going leave the house with hairy legs or a Sesame Street Bert-worthy unibrow.

For expert brow shaping and smooth as a baby’s bottom waxing, we turn to The Brow Studio. From the comfort of a girly chic South Minneapolis storefront, arches are defined, legs are smoothed and unmentionables are made—well, if not mentionable, at least very well manicured. The Brow Studio offers all forms of brow and body waxing along with a set of eyelash services that are truly de rigueur. Lash tints, perms and of course, extensions are all available to make those eyes pop.

Even though we try to live a low-maintenance life, we admit to an addiction to expertly crafted brows and no muss-no fuss waxing. For that, we love The Brow Studio, and know you will too!

“I” of the Tiger

In high school, we stayed trim from our participation in sports. Once we hit college, our physical discipline was replaced by late-night studying, pizza and parties. Hello, freshman fifteen.

Ten years later, we’re still toting it around. We hit the treadmill and pick up a DVD sometimes (we’ve tried them all – Taebo, The Firm, P-90X), but we ultimately get booored while seeing negigible results. Then we heard the buzz about Tiger Athletics, a club with the philosophy that “Everyone is an athlete inside.” While Tiger’s founders/trainers/adorable married couple, Chris and Stacie Clark have spent years training professional athletes, they fiercely push you in a gentle way, whether marathon master or mom-on-the-go. With a different location each day of the week such as Mini-Hops, E.J. Henderson’s turf and Maha!, each high-intensity session keeps our minds and our muscles guessing. In addition, our “team” of fellow clubsters are incredibly positive (with that many endorphins, how could you not be?).

Seriously, we’ve never had this much fun saying buh-bye to our gutt and butt. In addition, attend Core at Maha! and get 10% discount on all purchases at the activewear boutique that day!

On a Roll

We’ve been on a health kick lately. Morning runs, squats, sit-ups, and as much spinach as we can stand.  But occasionally our hard work is rewarded with a dressed-up dinner out. Our choice for delicious cuisine that doesn’t blow our calorie-counting regime? Sushi.

Wasabi is a raw fish and Hibachi fusion restaurant that rocks our taste buds and fills our tummies without burning through our wallet—or bulking our behind.  Located on Washington Avenue, Wasabi is housed on the second floor of one of the historic district’s funky and chic industrial buildings. Being diet-conscious, Edamame and Steamed Shrimp Shumai are our staple starters, followed by yellow tail, salmon and unagi sashimi. When we’ve really worked up an appetite we go for the Shrimp Tempura Roll or the JC Roll (Spicy Tuna, King Crab, Shrimp Tempura and Avocado). The Hibachi dinner of Filet Mignon or Scallops (complete with onion soup, salad, fried rice and vegetables) is a scrumptious and filling option for our hungry man date.

And for a guilt-free nip, we order hot sake or white wine. We’re hoping that with our newfound restraint and a regular diet of Wasabi, we’ll be just as hot as its namesake.

A Spring in Your Step

After months spent hiding under tights and trousers, our gams are ready for the big reveal. We’re officially back in sandal-seeking mode.

We’re busting out in a big way with these Cynthia Vincent wedges from Pumpz & Co., and will no doubt look even hotter after we liberally apply some faux tanner. Bonus: a little bird told us they’re ringing in spring with drawings and giveaways!

Burning Down the House

Candles are hands-down the best accessory for setting “the mood,” whether it’s one of those relaxing nights at home with a glass of wine and a hot bubble bath, or a celebratory dinner party.

CandleClothes are our favorite new home-décor accessory. These interchangeable, reusable, chic wraps for flameless candles are a smart and affordable way to change the look of flameless candles—perfect for any party, cozy romantic dinners… and everything in between!

Pressure Points

We’ve always been intrigued by acupuncture, but too scared to try it. The idea of needles sticking out of skin sends blood rushing to our head. Whew… we need to lie down…. on one of these StyleWellnes organic acumats.

Acumats (acupressure mats/spike mats) have been used for thousands of years for relaxation exercises, meditation and yoga, or healing the body from emotional, physical and mental blockages. We’re into that. And no needles? Sold.
